Chapter 469: "Optimus Prime, welcome to the Green Lantern Corps."
2022-10-19 Author: Great Demon Spirit
Just as Tony defeated Metron and seized the 'Mobius Chair,' the sole instrument of Deification, a streak of light flew from the Cosmos towards the Solar System.
This was a small escape craft, flying towards Earth at an astonishing speed.
Faintly, specks of green light could be seen.
Abin Sur, the greatest Lantern in the history of the Green Lantern Corps, the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, was now on the verge of death. A massive wound was exposed on his chest, with a faint, terrifying flash of yellow that flickered and vanished.
"Green Lantern Ring, proceed to the nearest inhabited planet, find my successor..."
Abin Sur spoke these few words with immense difficulty; he could clearly feel his life slipping away bit by bit.
At the very least, before he died, he had to find the successor from the prophecy—the one who would become an even greater Lantern than himself, the one who would create an unprecedented spectral miracle.
"How ironic..."
Abin Sur gasped for breath, a self-deprecating expression on his face.
He, the great Lantern who despised evil, actually believed a prophecy from a criminal?
This all started with a mission a year ago. To save a crashed spaceship, he violated two ironclad laws set down by the Guardians: 'A Lantern must not leave their assigned Sector to enter another Sector' and 'All Lanterns are strictly forbidden from setting foot on Ysmault in Sector 666.'
The Sector Abin Sur had ventured into a year ago was none other than Sector 666, where a brutal massacre had once occurred.
It was there that he encountered five misshapen demons, filled with immense rage and hatred, who had been imprisoned for countless years. They were nailed to crosses, suffering agonizing torment.
These five, with Atrocitus as their leader, formed an organization called The Five Inversions. They had once fanatically sought revenge against Oa, waging war for centuries against the Guardians' lackeys, the Green Lanterns.
In the end, they were defeated and imprisoned.
Then they met Abin Sur.
If Tony knew of this, he would surely realize that the fate of The Five Inversions was merely one insignificant transgression among the many despicable sins the Guardians had committed and covered up over ten billion years.
These five would later gain the favor of the Red Lanterns, sacrificing their all just to exact bloody revenge upon Oa.
One of the demons, named Qull, answered three of Abin Sur's questions for free. The first was the location of the crashed spaceship, while the remaining two involved prophecies.
One prophecy stated that in the future, an infinite darkness would descend, the five demons would escape their confinement, and they would join forces with the Green Lantern Corps to fight against the resurrected dead throughout the universe. The fate of the Lanterns would reach a turning point.
Abin Sur, of course, thought this was nonsense.
The second prophecy was that Abin Sur would find a great successor before his death.
At first, Abin Sur definitely did not believe it. As the strongest Lantern, he possessed his own indestructible willpower.
But as his investigation continued, some of the sins and darkness hidden in the long annals of history were exposed before him, bit by bit.
Abin Sur was stunned.
Who would have thought that the Guardians they served and respected had actually committed so many terrible sins?
Who would have thought that the seven Guardians, revered by countless lives and civilizations across the universe, were actually hiding such a terrifying past?
The massacre in Sector 666 had left only the five members of The Five Inversions alive—to be precise, it was because they were the sole survivors that they formed The Five Inversions out of immense rage and hatred, fanatically retaliating against the Guardians and their Green Lantern lackeys.
This massacre, shockingly, was also the work of the Guardians.
To cover up that cruel truth, they forbade the Green Lanterns from entering the Ysmault region of Sector 666 and permanently nailed these five survivors to crosses on Ysmault.
"It's all lies..."
Abin Sur stared blankly at the specks of starlight outside. With difficulty, he turned his eyes to look at the blazing Sun in the Solar System.
More than once, he had begun to doubt everything he had done. He had worked so hard, pledging allegiance to the Guardians, giving them his all... What was the point?
"Regardless, the Green Light is innocent, and the Lanterns are innocent too," Abin Sur thought to himself.
Abin Sur struggled to keep his eyes open, his brain working stiffly. He was afraid that if he closed his eyes or stopped thinking, he would die forever.
At least, just let him see his successor for a moment—the being who, according to legend, could create a spectral miracle.
The Green Lantern Ring on his finger flickered with green light as a voice resounded in Abin Sur's mind.
"Primary directive: Proceed to the nearest inhabited planet to find a suitable ring bearer..."
"Target acquired. Solar System, fourth planet, Mars."
At an incredible speed, the spaceship carried the mortally wounded Abin Sur towards the red planet just a stone's throw from Earth: Mars.
"Mars?" In a daze, Abin Sur lifted his eyelids, somewhat surprised.
He was the patrolman of this Sector and was very familiar with the layout of its life-sustaining planets.
In his memory, Mars was a desolate and uninhabited place. It was inhabited now?
But that didn't matter. He hoped the Green Lantern Ring could find a suitable successor; he was out of time.
Soon, the spaceship landed on Mars.
Red sandstorms still filled the sky, and the environment was harsh, but through the sandstorms, the silhouette of a city could already be seen.
It was a small city of steel, newly established.
In the base, Ultra Magnus was reporting.
"An unidentified spaceship has landed on Mars. It's a small craft. Estimated to not be carrying weapons of mass destruction."
Optimus Prime looked at his intelligence officer, Blaster.
"I'm trying to contact the spaceship, but there's no response," Blaster said. "Either the occupants are dead, or it's completely empty."
Optimus Prime stood up, looked in the direction of the crashed spaceship, and said in a deep voice, "In any case, we must go take a look. Someone might need help."
He strode forward, opened the heavy steel doors, and was about to lead a team to the crash site.
The other Autobots weren't surprised at all. Ultra Magnus opened his mouth to stop him, but thinking of Optimus Prime's character, he could only shut his mouth.
This was just Optimus Prime's nature; he was always willing to lend a helping hand to weaker beings.
This time was no different.
Besides, they hadn't had contact with outsiders for a long time. They had been busy building the Mars base, setting up incubation chambers, contacting Soundwave and the others on Earth, and constantly improving their technology tree.
Just then, a dazzling green light suddenly appeared, flying swiftly towards them from a distance.
It was a green orb of light.
"What is that!"
"Stop it!"
Ultra Magnus and the other Autobots roared, instantly drawing their weapons and aiming at the unknown green light.
This was too strange; they had never seen such a bizarre thing before.
The orb of green light flew straight towards Optimus Prime. Before the other Autobots could raise their guard and attack, a mechanical voice sounded from within it.
"Optimus Prime of Mars, you have the ability to overcome great fear. Welcome to the Green Lantern Corps!"
