Chapter 516: I Have a Bold Idea
2022-10-19 Author: Great Demon Spirit
"But you only gave him a contingent of twelve warriors!" Optimus Prime declared, tilting his head up. "The blame for Sinestro's failure should not fall entirely on him."
"Optimus Prime, we know you two are close, but that is no reason to indulge a criminal. Sinestro insisted on attacking, blinded by hatred, wanting to hunt down Parallax to avenge Abin Sur."
"We repeatedly warned him of Parallax's terror, yet he still chose to risk the attack. The twelve warriors who followed him all perished. If we had given him more men, it would have only led to more Lanterns dying."
Optimus Prime asked, "Then why didn't you stop him?"
"We will not obstruct the request of a Corps Leader. He has that authority," Ganthet replied.
Everyone fell silent.
Optimus Prime frowned. His metal forehead furrowed just like a human's, and if one were to get close enough, they could even hear the sound of compressing metal. Such a simple action contained enough power to crush an ordinary human.
"Optimus Prime, you have a more important mission to attend to," Sinestro said, glancing at Optimus Prime. His expression, for once, softened, a hint of approval and genuine closeness in his eyes.
He had always admired Optimus Prime's potential and willpower, favoring his character and resilience, but ultimately, he held reservations.
This was because Optimus Prime was first Tony's man, and only then his own—a fact that everyone, including the Guardians, knew clearly.
Moreover, Tony was a domineering, forceful, and unreasonable man.
But now that Optimus Prime had stood up for him, especially when Sinestro himself had lost all faith in the Green Lantern Corps, many of those issues were no longer issues.
On the contrary, Optimus Prime's identity could be an entry point for Sinestro to exploit. Perhaps he could contact Tony through Optimus Prime and secure him as outside help.
That's right, Sinestro was mentally prepared for his fate. He was a very intelligent man, and after seeing through the Guardians completely, some terrible ideas that he would never have had before were already brewing.
A Guardian spoke, "Optimus Prime, this is not a matter for you to interfere in. Stand down."
"Sinestro, by the judgment of the Guardians of the Universe, due to your command errors and reckless advance that resulted in the deaths of twelve Lanterns, you will be stripped of your position as Commander, deprived of your Green Lantern ring, and thrown into prison."
The Guardians pronounced their sentence.
Sinestro's face was calm, not even blinking an eye.
The Green Lantern ring on his hand suddenly became unresponsive, lit up, and flew away, landing in the palm of one of the Guardians.
Sinestro had no room to resist; the Green Lantern ring he relied on had abandoned him on the spot.
This, too, was within the Guardians' authority—they could easily influence a Green Lantern's ring.
Sinestro raised his head, gave Optimus Prime a deep look, and then said to the Guardians, "Honorable Guardians, I request that Optimus Prime be promoted to the new Leader of the Green Lantern Corps. He has the ability."
"No!"
"Absolutely not!"
"He is too young! He doesn't have the experience to shoulder such a heavy responsibility!"
The Guardians immediately snapped back, like cats whose tails had been stepped on. Optimus Prime leading the Green Lantern Corps? Wouldn't that be the same as Tony taking over the Green Lantern Corps?
At the very least, it would give Tony an excuse to interfere in the affairs of New Oa!
That was absolutely out of the question!
The Guardians' expressions turned incredibly grim. The Green Lantern Corps was their guarantee of immense military might, and they would never allow an outsider to meddle. It would strip them of their sense of security.
Sinestro's lips curled into a smirk. He gave Optimus Prime a meaningful look, then turned and walked down from the high platform. A Green Lantern, receiving an order, led Sinestro away.
Only Optimus Prime remained, along with the Guardians who stared at him coldly.
"Optimus Prime, your willpower is astonishing. You may graduate. You will take on the duty of a cosmic police officer, protecting weaker planets."
Ganthet spoke up to ease the tension.
Optimus Prime listened in silence. After a few more words, he was dismissed.
The ring on the middle finger of his right hand flickered with a green light, as if reflecting Optimus Prime's mood.
Optimus Prime descended the high platform step by step. His heavy body thudded against the ground, and his clenched right fist felt as if it were grasping something.
To the Green Lanterns, the most reliable thing in the world was the ring on their hand—it was the companion that fought alongside them.
But, no one had ever considered the possibility of their ring betraying them.
Optimus Prime, however, had.
He was different from the other Lanterns. He was influenced more by Tony and vaguely knew a little about the despicable nature of the Guardians.
"Sinestro..." Optimus Prime mused.
Sinestro had trained him for a whole month, holding almost nothing back. Anyone who wasn't completely ungrateful would feel a sense of gratitude, because Sinestro had no obligation to be so dedicated to him.
Optimus Prime did indeed hold respect for Sinestro. But the events of today made him think of much more.
The hunt for Parallax was just a trigger, something that had merely detonated what had been hidden by the Green Will.
"So... Sinestro is already prepared to rebel?" Optimus Prime frowned.
Arriving at the plaza, numerous Lanterns pointed at Optimus Prime. From time to time, someone would come up to chat, hoping to get to know the strongest rookie in history.
Just then, a message from the Guardians was transmitted. Every single Lantern in the Universe received the notification through their ring: Sinestro had been dismissed due to a major error.
The Lanterns burst into discussion.
"Optimus Prime, Sinestro is no longer our leader? Then who will command the Green Lantern Corps?" Tomar-Re, with the head of a fish, walked over and asked.
"The Guardians are deliberating. There's no result yet," Optimus Prime answered.
Beside them, the stocky Kilowog shrugged and slapped Optimus Prime on the back. "I think I'm a good fit. I can temporarily replace Sinestro—ow, damn it, my hand hurts."
"That's because you used too much force," Tomar-Re said coolly. "Kilowog, you aren't suited for the position of Leader either."
"How do you know I'm not suited? I'm responsible, patient, and decisive. I have everything a leader should have," snorted Kilowog, who resembled some kind of humanoid wild boar from Earth, clearly dissatisfied.
Instantly, Kilowog reached out his hand, and a huge meteorite suddenly formed in the air, then rapidly descended, smashing toward Tomar-Re.
With a bang, Tomar-Re simply created a laser that shattered the rock and said calmly, "But you have no brain."
Combat between Green Lanterns was simple. Besides competing in imagination and speed of thought, it was a contest of willpower. The more resolute the will, the more solid the manifested construct.
For example, Tomar-Re directly blasting Kilowog's small meteorite to pieces meant that Tomar-Re's willpower when firing that beam was tougher than the willpower used to form the meteorite.
Of course, it was also related to the physical phenomenon of a laser being able to shatter a meteorite with focused force.
The power of a manifested object was most directly related to the state of the Lantern's own willpower at the moment of its creation.
Lanterns, by their very nature, were extremely "mind-over-matter" beings.
"Alright, guys, we have more important things to do."
Watching his two friends brawling, Optimus Prime wasn't surprised at all. The two of them were always roughhousing like this.
Optimus Prime extended a hand, and two chains instantly formed, binding Tomar-Re and Kilowog tightly on the spot, making it impossible for them to break free.
"Hey, you launched a sneak attack! And these bindings are so tight!"
"Optimus Prime, if you've got any guts, let me go and fight you one-on-one! I'll definitely beat you this time, you first-year rookie!"
Tomar-Re and Kilowog complained.
"I suddenly have a bold idea," Optimus Prime said seriously.
Tomar-Re: "?!"
Kilowog: "!!!"
