Chapter 571: Nightfall
Author: Great Demon Spirit
"There are parademons here!!"
"Run! Contact the disaster response team immediately, get the superheroes here!"
"..."
A burly figure descended from the sky like a missile, plummeting with a sonic boom.
The now much more powerful Superman was still wearing his blue suit and red cape. The S-symbol on his chest was the same as ever, bringing a sense of security to the residents of Metropolis.
The parademon, which had clearly evolved after consuming enough fear, let out an angry, ear-piercing shriek. But in the next second, a punch from Superman sent it flying, shattering most of its body. The dumbfounded look on its face was frozen for eternity. Immediately after, Superman viciously smashed its skull.
Another parademon, killed.
Every one killed was one less to deal with.
The residents cheered loudly, unreservedly showering Superman with their gratitude and joy.
"You've become even stronger, Superman!" a citizen shouted to him from a rooftop.
True, Superman's new form wasn't very good-looking, but that didn't matter. To the citizens of Metropolis, and to Earth, a stronger Superman was a better Superman. As for his appearance, that sort of thing wasn't important.
Superman gave a slight nod to the citizens he had saved. His intimidating body took two quiet steps back as he said, "It's not safe here. Remember to carry an alarm with you when you go out in the future."
With that said, with a bang and a cloud of dust, Superman had already shot into the sky and disappeared.
This was a rare comfort for him, because the citizens he protected did not discriminate against him for his changed appearance. Everyone knew that Superman had fought a bloody battle against his enemies and nearly died, all for the sake of protecting them.
All they could do was offer their blessings.
And with that, Superman was deeply content. His favorite thing was to be looked upon with gratitude and reverence by the people he saved, to be seen as their role model.
He arrived at a deserted place and activated his now terrifyingly powerful abilities: super x-ray vision and super-hearing. The entire Earth, including the satellites in outer space, fell under his surveillance.
He confirmed it was safe, with no surveillance equipment.
He took out the glasses he had hidden, hesitated for a moment, then carefully put them back.
These glasses were a disguise tool created with Kryptonian technology. When worn, anyone who saw him would naturally perceive a different appearance. This was necessary for his other identity—Clark Kent.
Otherwise, the connection between Superman and Clark Kent would have been exposed long ago. After all, no one is that foolish. How could they fail to recognize someone who looks exactly the same? It all relied on the disguise provided by these glasses.
Clark looked down at his astonishingly transformed body and closed his eyes, carefully sensing every minute change within. He could feel his life factor slowly altering. The mutation phase had passed, and this slow evolution and adaptation would continue until Clark found a new body that was perfectly suited for him.
At that time, he would become incredibly powerful. A brand-new gene template would give him even more astonishing potential and capacity for growth.
Of course, in terms of potential, he couldn't compare to the Superman with the Codex of Life.
"Clark..."
Lois Lane stood at the entrance of the alley, looking at the man she once cherished with a complicated expression.
Now, there was only a deformed monster.
"Lois, I knew you would come!"
Clark was incredibly excited. He strode forward, subconsciously opening his arms to embrace her, just as he used to.
But Lois took a step back, her gaze complicated.
Clark froze.
The atmosphere grew heavy. They both looked at each other in silence. Gradually, the emotions in their eyes became more and more complex and sorrowful.
"We should have a proper talk..." Lois said in a low voice before Clark could speak.
His rapidly beating heart was like a great bell in Clark's ears, each beat striking his own heart with heavy force.
"Like we used to?" Clark asked hoarsely.
"Yes..."
Clark walked over, suppressing his wildly fluctuating emotions. He slowly picked up Lois and then flew into the sky.
In the past, this was what they always did—enjoying the night breeze, holding each other as they gazed up at the moon.
Just like before, Clark held Lois as he flew over Metropolis, looking down at the bustling city and the crowds of people coming and going below.
This time, they no longer hid, nor did they need to be cautious, because this was to be the very last time.
Clark held her, flying slowly. Their figures were spotted by the crowd below, causing a huge commotion.
They talked in low voices for a very, very long time, as if afraid of disturbing something. Finally, Clark arrived at Lois's doorstep and gently set her down, as if he were putting down the entire world.
Step back, turn, gaze, depart.
There was no usual farewell, just a clean, crisp departure.
"Clark..." Lois held back her tears and turned to open her door.
General Sam Lane happened to be home. He looked at his daughter with a stunned expression. "What is it, my child? The situation on Earth has finally stabilized, and it's rare for me to be home. Did... did that Clark Kent fellow bully you?!"
Lois kept her head down, quickly dropped her handbag, and ran into her room.
General Lane was furious. "I told you long ago, as my daughter, why bother flirting with an unreliable little reporter? He's a dead man! Daring to bully my daughter... I'll kill him!!"
Like the roar of a bull protecting its calf, his words were heard by Clark from kilometers away, not a single one missed. Clark couldn't help but reveal a bitter smile.
The grayish skin on his face pulled back, still revealing traces of his former appearance, though his features had become somewhat swollen. While strange, it couldn't be called ugly.
He quietly went to the top of the LexCorp building and looked down upon the city.
The LexCorp building had been acquired by A.R.G.U.S. and had changed owners long ago, but A.R.G.U.S. clearly had no intention of renaming it. Thus, LexCorp was preserved.
"In trouble?"
Diana, appearing like a casual passerby, arrived at the main entrance of the LexCorp building. She tilted her head back and looked up at Clark on the roof.
She wore a simple outfit: a brown leather jacket over a tube top, with jeans that highlighted her long legs. Her beautiful face wore light makeup as always, her tender red lips slightly parted as she looked at Clark.
There was no need to deliberately raise her voice. For beings of their level, a mere bit of distance was nothing.
Clark glanced down at Diana, his spirits low. "Don't you have a mission? What are you doing here?"
"There are three hundred Transformer guards over at the cemetery. By the time I got there, the pitiful parademons causing trouble had been torn to pieces. I also just learned that all the dilapidated vehicles used as disguises there were actually a group of killing machines."
Diana leaped onto the roof, tilting her head with a look of surprise and astonishment. "This isn't like you. I've never seen you like this before."
