Chapter 625: Civil War (3)

October 19, 2022 Author: Great Demon Spirit

Facts prove that human beings aren't afraid of taking things seriously, but rather of taking them too seriously.

What's most feared is the excessive imposition of one's own perceived correct ideology onto others during this process.

Tony Stark is an example; he firmly believed he was right, that superheroes who wielded great power should accept the supervision of The Authorities.

And with him as Secretary of Defense, coordinating and mediating, Tony was convinced that everything would be wonderful. No one in this world was more suited to be a superhero, nor anyone better suited to be Secretary of Defense.

But he truly couldn't understand the mindset of the Justice League.

"Their situation is different from ours, Tony. The purpose of establishing the Justice League was precisely to avoid being overly constrained by The Authorities, unlike us Avengers. They deeply resent that."

Captain America sighed.

An official delivered a stack of documents to the new Secretary of Defense, who was almost buried under various papers.

As he left, he glanced at Captain America, his eyes filled with excitement and reverence, seemingly overjoyed to be so close to his idol.

"They must accept supervision. I'm willing to make concessions for them, promising them more autonomy," Tony said, looking up, his face etched with fatigue.

"It's meaningless, Tony. No matter how much autonomy, it's fundamentally different from their present circumstances." Captain America tapped the table, trying to get Tony's attention.

But Tony was distracted, staring blankly ahead.

"I suggest we abandon the Superhero Registration Act; it was a Red Skull conspiracy to begin with," Captain America rubbed his forehead, sighing.

"Red Skull's cleverest move was turning a conspiracy into a good idea everyone endorsed," Tony said flatly. "So, whether it's a conspiracy or not doesn't fundamentally matter."

"Then what do you want to do? Issue a warrant for the Justice League?"

"No, we'll talk to them in person..."

"We? Are you sure?"

"At least it's better than me issuing a warrant, right?"

...

The "talk" Tony referred to wasn't a verbal discussion. They were all superheroes with firm beliefs, and mere words could hardly shake deeply held ideologies.

Those with wavering willpower couldn't be called superheroes; otherwise, they'd be easily swayed by supervillains to the opposing side in minutes.

So, they would talk with their fists, transforming public affairs into internal matters, affairs existing only within the Avengers and the Justice League.

As long as one side defeated the other, it would naturally mean their will and ideology were upheld, forcing the losing side to compromise without causing greater disaster.

Neither the Avengers nor the Justice League wanted to fight, but they had to.

On the coast, an abandoned base served as the final negotiation site.

The Avengers: Iron Man, Captain America, God-King Thor, Spider-Man, Black Widow, Ant-Man (second generation), Swordsman, Mantis, Shang-Chi, Deathstrike, Living Lightning, Firebird, Blackhawk, Quake...

The Justice League: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, The Atom (second generation), Zatanna, Black Canary, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Blue Beetle, Vibe...

Dozens of superheroes stood at opposite ends of the abandoned base, warily eyeing each other.

Although dozens of superheroes died during the Steppenwolf invasion, new superheroes continued to emerge endlessly. Technology and genetic mutations provided the two leagues with new members.

This was even with A.R.G.U.S. strongly restraining the metahumans connected to them, strictly prohibiting their involvement in the Civil War; otherwise, Ghost Rider, Green Goblin, and others would also have been incited by their friends to join the battle.

"This is the last warning, The Bat. Put down your weapons, reveal your identities to me, and everything can be discussed at the negotiation table," Tony said solemnly.

Batman's voice was hoarse: "No one has the right to impose their personal will on another group, not even you, Secretary. Go back. The Justice League will never reveal its members' identities. We are fundamentally different from you."

Batman scanned the opposite side: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Quake... They had never hidden their true identities from the beginning, disdaining to hide them, and having no need to.

They had always had extremely close ties with The Authorities from the start. People like Spider-Man were actually a minority in the Avengers.

Conversely, on the Justice League's side, all wore masks or helmets, wary of their true identities being exposed... Only Diana was an exception, but she wasn't human; she was an Amazonian created by Zeus.

Clark also usually wore special disguise glasses made with Krypton technology to change his appearance.

The Justice League's foundation lay in its secrecy; from its establishment, it had taken a different path from the Avengers.

When Tony raised the banner of fairness and safety, demanding the Justice League remove their masks, the conflict had already intensified completely and become irreconcilable.

Everyone believed they were right and the other side was wrong.

Negotiations broke down; the problem could only be solved with fists. Defeat the other side, force them to accept one's own ideology, and the problem would be temporarily resolved quite effectively.

Tony put on his helmet, energy shooting from his hands, and charged at Batman first.

This was a signal, a signal whose original meaning was Light and Justice, yet it irresistibly pushed things towards the Abyss.

Dozens of superheroes crashed together like two torrents. In the instant of contact, some were sent flying. Though few were immediately knocked back, the confrontation engulfed the vast majority of superheroes who had appeared on Earth.

Iron Man, clad in his armor, and Batman, wearing his brand-new armor, collided. Various high-tech weapons flew, and small missiles indiscriminately bombarded each other.

According to their estimates and analyses of each other, this level of missile was nothing to them and would not cause fatal damage to the enemy's armor.

Bang!

Iron Man nimbly dodged a heavy punch from Batman and a barrage of missiles, but he couldn't avoid the second punch. A punch packing two million tons of force instantly smashed Iron Man into the ground.

A deep crater was formed in the hard ground.

"A new model of armor?" Iron Man asked, lying in the deep crater, his head a little dizzy.

"Fenris Armor. That's the name of this new suit of armor," Batman said hoarsely.

Iron Man raised his hand and fired an energy cannon, hitting the Fenris Armor's beetle-like flattened head squarely: "Fenrir, son of Loki in Norse Mythology? That guy even killed Odin in the myths, but we have a true Norse Deity on our side."

Batman extended the colossal, three-fingered mechanical hand of his suit. The powerful kinetic energy granted this behemoth incredible speed, allowing it to easily block Tony's energy cannon, before the hand opened wide.

"The Fenris Armor also has another name..."

Batman whispered, "Anti-Avengers Armor!"
