Chapter 718: Sinestro War (1)
October 19, 2022 Author: Great Demon Spirit
The Yellow Impurity and Lethal Force were measures set by the Guardians to prevent the Green Lantern Corps from losing control. Every Lantern Ring had a Yellow Impurity, making it extremely vulnerable to the Power of Fear and Yellow Energy, which was why all their buildings on Oa were dyed yellow. Locking down Lethal Force was to prevent Lanterns from being consumed by slaughter, and it was also a protective measure the Guardians specifically set, fearing they themselves might be victims of an Instant Kill by a Lantern. The more leashes they put around the Lanterns' necks, the safer they felt.
Ganthet sighed deeply as he watched his arguing companions. As the only one who retained his full emotions, he knew these individuals beside him better than anyone.
"If we don't remove these shackles, we won't be able to resist Sinestro's army... He really did it, he found a way to create Yellow Lantern Rings. The Emotional Spectrum is no longer a secret."
"That despicable traitor, as a former Leader of the Green Lantern Corps, he committed the atrocity of slaughtering his comrades. He must face judgment, using Oa's most severe laws."
"We need to win first. Of the 7200 Lanterns, over a thousand have already been killed, and a large number of Lantern Rings are now, according to their pre-set programs, searching for successors in various Sectors... Generally, Lanterns without strict training find it hard to utilize a Lantern Ring's abilities. If Sinestro continues his rampage, the Green Lantern Corps will only grow weaker."
A Life Form newly receiving a Lantern Ring cannot strictly control their thoughts, and a Lantern Ring is a weapon that functions based on the user's Willpower, thoughts, and Imagination. An untrained person can easily have their mind wander. They might be halfway through flying when their mind starts thinking about what to eat for their next meal, and then this Imagination flows into the Lantern Ring and manifests as a Construct. As a result, the Lantern falls from the sky and dies. Such incidents were endless.
"Send out the Supreme Green Lanterns. They've been hiding on Oa for years; it's time to show Sinestro our sharpest weapon," a Guardian said coldly.
The Supreme Green Lanterns were created through a cruel Augmentation process that transformed living Lanterns into semi-Robots. Those who became Supreme Green Lanterns had their emotions erased, becoming living flesh-and-blood Robots. This was also how the Guardians controlled the Green Lantern Corps. They distrusted Lanterns with strong emotions, so they specially created the Supreme Green Lanterns to act as "inspectors" and lead the Green Lantern Corps.
Ganthet said, "I propose Optimus Prime returns to Oa..."
"Denied."
"Denied."
"Denied. We have the Supreme Green Lanterns, and we've stored a large number of Lantern Rings. We can also loosen the Green Lantern Corps' restraints to increase their Combat Power."
"We don't need Optimus Prime to participate. Otherwise, Tony will have a reason to interfere with Oa's internal affairs. Many of our secrets are not suitable for outsiders to know. At this sensitive juncture, we cannot take the slightest risk."
"Denied."
"The Life Forms Sinestro brought back from the Anti-Matter Universe have been fighting me for years. We know them inside and out. There's no need for Optimus Prime to join. Denied."
The other six coldly rejected Ganthet's proposal.
Ganthet closed his mouth. Talking about words like "sacrifice" and "enlightenment" with these emotionless companions was meaningless. In their eyes, it wouldn't matter if all 7200 Lanterns died several times over, as long as they could defeat Sinestro. Even Sayd, the Guardian with a trace more emotion, could not approve of Ganthet's approach.
"Green Lantern Rings, Yellow Lantern Rings, Red Lantern Rings—three of the seven Lantern Rings have appeared. The Prophecy in the books is slowly becoming reality." Sayd paused, stating indifferently, "We cannot risk it anymore."
Throughout the subsequent discussion, Ganthet remained silent. He had nothing more to say.
...
Most Lanterns reconvened on Oa. Although Sinestro's Legion had been intercepting isolated Lanterns, the battle-hardened Lanterns were not easy targets. In their desperate counterattacks, they always managed to inflict some damage on the enemy. But only a little.
"Attention all members, the ban on Lethal Force is now officially lifted. All Lanterns are permitted to use Lethal Force against Sinestro's Legion."
"Repeat, now..."
The Guardians once again loosened their control over the Green Lantern Corps, allowing all Lanterns to freely use attacks and methods with lethal potential.
Since fighting Steppenwolf on Earth and confronting the Annihilation Wave in Sector 2814, the Green Lantern Corps had its third opportunity for unrestricted engagement.
The war between the Green and Yellow Corps erupted across all fronts. The conflict between Lantern Corps was unlike previous Factions' battles; Lantern Ring combat was arguably the most brutal war of attrition.
After each Lantern died, both Green Lantern Rings and Yellow Lantern Rings would immediately detach from their Host and seek out the next successor in the nearest area. When Sinestro created the Yellow Lantern Rings, he mimicked the functions of the Green Lantern Rings, even replicating the ability to find new users nearby. Therefore, in theory, as long as Life Forms throughout the Universe weren't wiped out, and as long as a single Lantern Ring remained undamaged, the war would continue indefinitely. Once one died, the Lantern Ring would immediately return to the battlefield with a new Lantern, continuing the desperate fight against the enemy, constantly ensuring the survival of the fittest. People were constantly dying, and new Warriors were constantly being forced to join this brutal war of attrition.
Sinestro smashed a Lantern's head with a single punch. His blood-red face revealed chilling Killing Intent, and the dense fire of hatred seemed to incinerate the enemies blocking his path.
"I only need to destroy Oa; these idiotic Lanterns aren't worth bothering with." Sinestro gazed contemptuously at the battlefield before him, where countless yellow and green Energy blasts flew erratically, and various bizarre Aura-infused Construct weapons were created, furiously bombarding each other. Sinestro flew through the boundless Universe, killing every Lantern who stood in his way.
Superboy-Prime had long since charged into the battlefield, rampaging through it. Not a single Lantern could withstand a single move from him, and even some unlucky Yellow Lanterns were eliminated by the bloodthirsty Superboy-Prime. Wearing a Yellow Lantern Ring, Superboy-Prime greatly enjoyed this combat style that relied on Imagination; it was quite novel for him.
Duzun watched the cackling Superboy-Prime with a sinister glint in his eyes.
"Give up, Duzun, you're not his match, at least not yet," Sinestro said expressionlessly, arms crossed.
Duzun whispered, "You don't need to tell me; I know what to do."
"Let's hope so, otherwise I can't guarantee I'll keep my promise with Mobius," Sinestro sneered.
